WPPI NYC / PPE 2011 LOGOAugust 24, 2011PRESS SUMMARY – Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) announces that entries are now being accepted into the first WPPI NYC @ PhotoPlus 16 x 20 Print Competition. Entries will be accepted from now until September 23, 2011. Categories include Wedding: Bride and Groom Together, Bride or Groom Alone and Wedding Party; and Portrait – Individual and Group.

“Print competitions have always been taken very seriously throughout WPPI’s history,” said George Varanakis, Show Director of WPPI and Publisher of Rangefinder. “And WPPI NYC wouldn’t be complete without a presentation of the best prints in Wedding and Portrait photography.”

The top-scoring prints will be displayed before 25,000 attendees at WPPI NYC @ PhotoPlus, October 27 and 28 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City. Trophies will be awarded to first-place winners who will also receive a one-year WPPI membership and a free registration with guest to WPPI 2012. Accolade points will be awarded to WPPI members for prints scoring 80 or above. A Wedding and Portrait Grand Award winner will be chosen and then recognized at the WPPI 2012 Convention and Trade Show taking place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV, next February.

WPPI NYC / PPE 2011 LOGOAugust 22, 2011PRESS SUMMARY – Wedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) announces that registration is now open for WPPI NYC – the first ever WPPI Expo to take place on the East Coast. Co-locating with PhotoPlus Expo this fall in new exhibit space at the Javits Convention Center in New York City, WPPI NYC will host a full day of educational seminars for professional photographers on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. A two-day Expo will follow on October 27-28, 2011 from 10:00am – 5:00pm each day.

“It’s hard to believe that in just two short months we’ll be bringing the enthusiasm and positive energy of WPPI to the East Coast,” said George Varanakis, Show Director of WPPI and Publisher of Rangefinder. “Our co-location with PhotoPlus Expo enables us to reach out to all levels of photographers on the East Coast and extend our educational offerings and Expo in our first ever WPPI experience on the East Coast.”

The annual WPPI Convention and Trade Show, which took place this past February 2011, hosted attendees and speakers from throughout the United States as well as from 46 foreign countries. In addition to more than 160 seminars, WPPI offered print and album competitions (with winners from all over the world). WPPI NYC will offer the first-ever 16×20 print competitions on the East Coast. Details are forthcoming.

All WPPI NYC seminars and the Expo will take place at the Javits Convention Center in New York City. Attendees who register will also have full access to attend the PhotoPlus Expo. The pre-registration rate to attend all WPPI NYC seminars, the WPPI NYC Expo and PhotoPlus Expo is $99. On-site registration will be $150. In addition, all registered attendees of PhotoPlus Expo will have full access to the WPPI NYC Expo.

WPPI Announces Fall 2011 WPPI U

June 25, 2011PRESS SUMMARYWedding & Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) announces its second WPPI U taking place September 25-27, 2011, at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA. WPPI U is an intense university-style, two-and-a-half-day seminar providing the fundamentals of photography to help today’s up-and-coming photographers not only strengthen their shooting skills, but also learn how to be successful in their business and marketing practices.

“The response to our first-ever WPPI U held at this past year’s WPPI Convention & Trade Show was so astounding we could not wait until WPPI 2012 to offer this wonderful educational opportunity again,” said George Varanakis, Show Director of WPPI and Publisher of Rangefinder.

“We like to think of WPPI U as ‘Photography 101’ for the emerging pro. And with so many new photographers entering this competitive business, the time is right for us to continually offer better ways to provide basic photography and business education to these new photographers even outside of our annual convention.”

Hosting WPPI U will be professional photographer Tamara Lackey. And scheduled to speak at WPPI U and teach up-and-coming professional photographers are renowned professional photographers Sal Cincotta, Lindsay Adler, Jasmine Star, Doug Gordon, Sue Bryce, Tim Meyer, Blair and Suzanne Phillips, Gene Ho, and Michael Gilbert. Javits Convention Center in New York City, WPPI NYC will host a full day of educational programs for professional photographers on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. A two-day tradeshow will follow on October 27-28, 2011 from 10:00am – 5:00pm each day.

I had the chance to meet with Dan Ikeda, Director of Technical Services from Tiffen – Steadicam, at the 2011 WPPI Trade show and Convention, to talk about their latest stabilizing rigs. We take a look at the Steadicam Pilot for full size video cameras up to 10 pounds, Steadicam Merlin for DSLRs and the Steadicam Smoothee for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3Gs and compact camcorders.
