April 17, 2011 - At the MIX11 conference Wednesday, Microsoft unveiled the upcoming version of their Windows Phone OS – codenamed Mango. The announcement included a variety of exciting new platform features including multitasking and augmented reality.

With the new update, app developers will soon have more access to the motion sensor library, camera, and device-to-device file transfer capabilities. The update is also centered on speedier performance in app switching, improved tomb-stoning, app multitasking, and Internet Explorer 9.

Microsoft presented a test-drive of the updates by giving attendees a sneak peek into several popular next-gen apps from Amazon Shopping, Kik Messenger, Spotify, and Skype.

Developers will be the first to have access to Mango in May. The public release date yet to be scheduled.
