Photo Challenge – March 2011: There’s No Place Like Home
By
First Place Prize Package Worth $1,360
Update March 2, 2011: First and Second place prize packages have just been increased in value thanks to SongFreedom.com.
See details below.
It’s winter – at least in some parts of the country – and because of that I understand some of you may not be able to, or simply may not want to, leave home in order to photograph something. That’s OK, because the photo challenge this month won’t even require you to get out of your PJ’s if you don’t want to.
This month we challenge you to photograph what you call home. According to dictionary.com home can be defined in some of the following ways: a house, apartment, or other shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family, or household; the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered; any place of residence or refuge: a heavenly home. You can interpret the challenge literally and photograph your house or things in it, your neighborhood, your hometown, etc. For example, what do you see when you look out your window? Do you have interesting views? Maybe your home or neighborhood has historic significance. Or maybe you collect something interesting like sports memorabilia or first edition books and have these displayed in your home.
You can also take the challenge more figuratively and photograph that which means home to you: your favorite place, a person, an activity (as in “home is where the heart is”).
I’m very fortunate to live in a place where there is very little inclement weather but despite that I love being at home. To me, it’s a place that’s peaceful like no other. By the same token, the city of San Diego is not only my home; it’s also where my heart is. I felt at home here the first time I visited so much so that I became determined to return. As always, here are a few of my images to get you started.
Submission Period
You can submit your photo starting today, March 1, 2011 through March 22, 2011.
Public Voting
Voting is open to everyone daily from March 1, 2011 through March 22, 2011. Be sure to invite your friends and family to vote for your photo once everyday during the submission period. The more votes your photo gets the higher it moves in the rankings. Photos with the most votes will be moved to the first page for our judges and everyone else to see.
Judges
Judges for the March 2011 Photo Challenge will be Ana Ramirez, Joseph Cristina and
Jim Goldstein.
Judges Review
Starting March 23, 2011 through March 28, 2011, public voting will be turned off and our panel of judges will review the submissions. Even though the popular photos will be up front for our judges to see, they will pick the winners from the entire pool of submissions, just in case a gem slipped through the cracks.
Winners Announced
First, Second and Third place winners will be announced on March 31, 2011. All winners will be notified by email and prizes will be sent out shortly after.

Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, I came to the US to get an education in interior design. Art has always been a part of my life – my mother worked in art museums, my family owned art galleries – there has always been a curiosity and appreciation for all things creative. After I completed my degree I opened an event design studio in Fort Lauderdale where wedding flowers were the main focus. For seven years I worked as a floral designer and I adored it. During that time I began to explore photography in order to build my event design portfolio.
I now live in San Diego with my beloved husky Bella and I have fallen in love with photography and the creative process. I see every shoot as an opportunity to learn or try something new. My photography is organic and unstructured, candid and un-posed, natural, unplanned, honest and wrapped in Southern California style. I seek to photograph the beauty in the world around me so that you may experience it the way I do. What you see in my Etsy shop is my passion, my joy and my vision. To me, photography is a privilege and I am honored to be able to capture memories that others will treasure for years to come.
Photography is my passion. What you see in my portfolio is my vision, my joy, my world.
