A Photographer’s Diary, Accountability

How would it be if not only did you get do away with your to do lists, you had someone there to make sure you completed all the tasks you set yourself each week? Step forward an accountability partner.

Since the year has begun I’ve been looking for a way to help me keep on track with my goals and just give myself some extra motivation. Something to help me complete tasks on those days when, you know how it is, you just feel a little sluggish and think everything can wait until tomorrow.

A winter lane

This new process I’ve put into my life is paying dividends. I now have an accountability partner. This is a friend and business woman who was also looking for a way to keep on track with her goals for the year.

At the beginning of every week we email each other a list of tasks that we want to complete for the week. Then on Friday we either have a phone call to check how we’ve done or we email with a list of what we’ve completed.

Knowing that come Friday I will have to report it motivates me to get everything done. For sure, not everything gets completed, for the last few weeks I’ve had business cards and flyers on there and only today have I been to the printers.

However the main things on the list are getting done in the week. The other bonus is it becomes a mini brainstorming session for us. When I put on my list a couple of weeks ago I must find some royalty free music websites that don’t cost a fortune, Libby emailed back with a website for me to look at.

Having that weekly chat means that we get to talk purely about business, well kind of! We mull over any issues we are having and brainstorm, it’s like our monthly mastermind call only more intense. And I’m loving it!

Along with the accountability partner, I’ve adopted a way around the dreaded ‘to do lists’; scheduling. I have got myself a day to view diary and now at the end of each day, schedule the following one. When I have a ‘to do list’ I tend to pick the easy things on it and leave the other things until another time. The benefit of scheduling my day means that I get things done in the order I want to, knowing that I have plenty of time to complete them. Which all means I don’t end up avoiding the tasks I’d rather not do, like accounts!

And of course, by scheduling the day, it all helps me to work towards completing my weekly goals. How is this week’s goal list going I hear you ask. Well let’s just say Friday is going to be a very busy day!
