I have been taking my time deciding what type of photo and logo to use on the new website for Healing with Photography. For me the lotus flower has been over worked and it isn’t unique now to associate it with healing, and beyond anything, the core role of the courses are photography and I wanted it to reflect some beautiful photography too. Yes I know, a little bit of ego creeping in there!
I browsed the templates of the web design company at SmartDeCat and was very taken with one that had a photo of the sea; and it was easy for me to take a similar photo. Yet on looking around on the internet, a calming sea is also pretty much well used in the healing genre, and did this truly reflect the photography element other than it was a photo of water.
Also, to take this scene involved a two hour journey to get to a coast, which has blue sea water, rather than the brown estuary water which is closest to me. Do you know it wasn’t until I went to the south coast of the UK on holiday a good few years ago that I realised that blue sea water actually existed in this country.
The fact I kept putting the trip off suggested to me that it wasn’t quite what I wanted, I wasn’t connecting with it. So the other day quite by accident I came upon the ideal banner photo and an image that I can use on business cards and all marketing material for Healing with Photography.
Having a relaxing afternoon in the garden with my drawing pad and charcoal I sat down to draw the star gazer lilies, my favourite of all my lilies, though I don’t tell the others that; I tell them they are all beautiful! The fragrance that comes from these lilies is just hypnotic, I could inhale them all day. I took a break from my drawing and looked down at the page and realised how beautiful they looked, how again, just as I did when I drew the Faraglioni rocks of Capri, I was connected heart and soul to the image.
Suddenly it dawned on me, why not use these beautiful lilies as my banner for the site, it’s far better than a stretch of coast that doesn’t hold any significance to me. I scampered off and got my camera and started shooting, though the photo you see above is actually a shoot from the following day. I had already decided a close up of the stamen and petals would work as I was hampered for a wider shot by the greenhouse which the lilies border but I vetoed this when I got the shot above.
I had lain down on the ground to get a close up of one of my Longiflorum lilies, (white) in bud; but the concept was better in my head. As I swivelled round and saw the pink of the lilies against the clear blue sky, the breeze paused for a moment and I took my chance, and you can see the result for yourself.
I quite often lie on the ground for a photo, usually face down to get some texture in the foreground though I’ve never laid down on my back before for a photo; I think I might try it more often where flowers are concerned.
So now I have my banner photo I can add it to my the website which is just a couple of weeks from being ready, this one is initially easier to set up than my photography site as I’m just going to put up a couple of pages explaining what Healing with Photography is about, soon hopefully I will move into selling online courses so stand by to hear all about the fun and games with that one!
Today I have set up a Facebook page for Healing with Photography and in a shameless plug, if you’d to ‘like’ the page here is the link https://www.facebook.com/pages/Healing-with-Photography/137439026343757
Next week I’ll go deeper into Healing with Photography and share with you what I’m currently doing to get these courses out into the public arena. It’s all happening and it’s really exciting for me!

Living in the beautiful rural county of Yorkshire it was perhaps natural for Ruth to have an affinity with the countryside and its wildlife. Creativity is Ruth’s driving force finding an outlet in television & radio she worked for many years as producer for BBC & ITV.
However a love of photography and for being surrounded by nature called her to go back to her photography training and bring pleasure and joy to people through her connection with our planet.
Staying in the moment when taking her images allows her to experience the natural magnificence unfolding before her eyes. It is this moment of mediation, of gratitude, that she evocatively conveys through her images.
Love the photo of the lilies above for your website. Can’t wait to see the site live!
