This last couple of weeks I’ve taken some time to do some different things to usual and have a bit of break before I go into the recces for the holidays. The first Italian resort to recce, the region of Cilento, it’s an area that I don’t know, though I do know it’s meant to be even more beautiful than the Amalfi Coast. And from personal experience, I know when I’ve been in Sorrento and taken the public bus down to the beautiful city of Salerno, beyond Amalfi, you look across and you can see the coast stretching out beyond and it does look enticing.
If you are holidaying on the Amalfi Coast, do take a public bus down to Amalfi, and change for a bus to Salerno – always try and sit on the right hand side of the bus going down to Amalfi so you get the best views, though if you suffer from vertigo, stay to the left. You’ll find the coast gets even more stunning on that section between Amalfi and Salerno. And the city itself is beautiful and understated with a wide promenade lined by palm trees and a very modest cathedral compared to other Italian churches. Anyway enough of the holiday blog, I’ll tell you all about the recce when I get back.
The time away from the photography was to help bring me back refreshed after having a break however I’ve been so busy doing other things I don’t seem to have had much time to myself. I’ve been enjoying having a wander around camera shops which I don’t do very often. I’ve been accessorising for the new camera, a polarising filter, a camera bag, lightweight tripod, and the jury’s out on the ND Grads for where to buy them. For me, camera bags and tripods are really things I feel you need to go to a shop and have at look in person rather than buying them online, whereas for my SD cards I always go to Amazon as they are so much cheaper than the high street.
It’s given me a chance to have a look round the high street camera shops whilst avoiding the main chain, because I’ve found them a little bit soulless, and to my joy, I’ve come across the shop where I proudly bought my brand spanking new analogue SLR from, when I was in college. They used to and still do sell second hand cameras and lenses and just altogether the attitude from the staff is more enthusiastic, and I got the feeling of a child in a sweetshop.
So, I’ve had a wonderful time trying out new tripods and camera bags and it got me wondering, where do you go to get your accessories from? Your camera bags, batteries etc. I thought it might be quite nice for people to share your little gems of shops or websites at the bottom of this article or at my Facebook page. You might inspire others and you might know of places that no-one else has come across before.
The shop I was talking about was London Camera Exchange, although a chain they don’t feel like one at all and probably because you won’t see the same second hand stuff in every one of their shops. So please feel free to write at the bottom of this article and let us know.

Living in the beautiful rural county of Yorkshire it was perhaps natural for Ruth to have an affinity with the countryside and its wildlife. Creativity is Ruth’s driving force finding an outlet in television & radio she worked for many years as producer for BBC & ITV.
However a love of photography and for being surrounded by nature called her to go back to her photography training and bring pleasure and joy to people through her connection with our planet.
Staying in the moment when taking her images allows her to experience the natural magnificence unfolding before her eyes. It is this moment of mediation, of gratitude, that she evocatively conveys through her images.
