Tying The Knot: Introducing Milton Gan, Wedding Photographer

Hey there, I’m Milton and I’m a wedding photographer based in beautiful Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. I also shoot babies in my spare time (will that ever sound correct?!).

I never intended to become a photographer, so you’re not about to hear about how I picked up my first camera at 9 months and was processing my own film by the time I was two.

I also used to hate weddings to be honest. But bear in mind that I was born in the 70s – yeah you know what I’m talking about! Bad outfits, bad haircuts, and bad photos!

The 80s weren’t much better but then came the 90s and one particular film which changed my perception of tying the knot: Four Weddings And A Funeral.

Now, that doesn’t mean I developed a penchant for giant meringue dresses or hanging out in wardrobes while the happy couple made merry! No, it was actually Hugh Grant’s best man’s speech which triggered something in me. To quote: “I am, as ever, in bewildered awe of anyone who makes this kind of commitment that Angus and Laura have made today. I know I couldn’t do it and I think it’s wonderful they can.”

Those two short, simple sentences made me realise that weddings weren’t something that just automatically happened to everyone. You had to be truly in love with someone; enough that you could spend the rest of your life with them.

And that’s when I became fascinated with love.

Moving from London to Sydney five years ago was the next milestone. I was suddenly in one of the most photogenic cities in the world and my hobbyist appreciation for photography suddenly became serious. I bought an entry level DSLR and pushed it to its limits before realising that I was ready to move up to the big league combinations of numbers and letters such as 5D MkII. Plus weddings took a different form to what I had experienced in the UK. Out went big, cold churches and stuffy suits, and in came outdoor garden parties set against some of the most breathtaking backdrops in the world.

The time had come to go pro.

Until now my career has been in the world of advertising and marketing, so I’m fortunate to have hands on experience working on marketing strategies for some of the biggest and brightest companies in the world. That put me in good stead to launch and promote my own photography business, with a particular focus on using social media.

I’m currently balancing my two careers, working 4 days a week in media and 3 days and 7 nights in photography! But hopefully that’s going to change as I aim to become a full time pro by the end of the year.

Until that time I’d like to share my knowledge and experiences from the point of view of an emerging professional wedding photographer; a position that I have been fascinated with and I know many readers are interested in. I’ll be writing honestly and openly about what it’s like behind the lens and in the home office, how I choose my equipment and how I grow my business, the good and the bad, the highs and the lows. I hope you enjoy reading my posts and would love to hear your comments, your thoughts and your own experiences.

Cheers

Milton
