Marketing Campaigns for Photographers #9 Baby Passport Pictures

These days as ridiculous as it seems most countries require babies to have their own passports (rather than the child traveling on a parental passport).
Whatever you think about a 3 year old traveling with a passport that has a picture of him or her at 6 days old……. it’s a goldmine for studio portrait photographers.
Where can you get baby passport photos?
Not many places…. and that’s the beauty of it all. It’s tricky to hold a baby up in a kiosk and even though many regulations have been relaxed in terms of eyes open etc it’s still tricky to do on an iphone.
I know of a few places here in south London that make a lot of money just out of these £7.99 prints.
Is it worth my time?
Well if I told you that I know of one shop which makes around £40,000 a year just on passport photos you might say YES!
But that’s not the reason why this is totally worth your time.
Imagine if would that you shot 10 of these a day…… ok at £7.99 that’s only an extra £80 a day and to get that number you’ll need a fairly busy area with a good footfall.
But that is also 10 people who walked through the door of your studio who wouldn’t have normally.
That’s 50 people a week…… walking through your door……. who are your target audience.
That’s not even the best part……..
It might take you about 10 minutes to shoot, resize and print the prints.
In that 10 minutes you’ll have time to show them the studio, some examples of your work, some of the offers……. you could always just go ahead and book them in for a full session.
Maybe one of your offers is that they get there passport picture free if they book a session
Put it this way……
If you had 10 minutes to talk face to face in your own studio with a potential client that fits exactly into your target market …….. what percentage of them do you think YOU can book?
50%……30%……10%…….?
Worst case scenario you book another 200 sessions this year!

I divide my time between being a photographer, retoucher, photography blogger and podcaster. Deep down I like to consider myself a portrait photographer and in my short 10 ten years in the business I’ve taken over 100,000 people’s studio portraits. When I’m not taking pictures I’m writing about it, most of my rambles can be found daily at http://photocreative365.com.
