If you have ever read this column before you will know that I love retro images. Even so, there are times when you want something artsy, but not necessarily retro. Maybe you want to channel your inner Monet and show your impressionist style. Then check out the Avignon iPhone app. Interestingly enough, this free application is provided not by a photographic or graphics company, but by a property developer in Hong Kong. Yes, a property developer. It seems that Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd. has developed a new residential property named Avignon that features a Monet-styled garden. And they have developed a new iPhone app to promote their new property. While I am not in the market for any property in Hong Kong (though the property looks lovely), I will definitely use the free app.
Operating the app is simple. You can either take a photo with your iPhone or select an existing photo (from any of your photo albums or your camera roll). You then simply select a filter (Oil Paint, Spread, Emboss, Equalize, and Black & White). You can then select a frame, which is essentially various shapes of light vignettes. You can then save to your Camera Roll, share by email or share to Facebook. It would have been nice if they had included an option to share to Twitter and to scale the photo to fit in the frame. The app also includes a neat slideshow feature. There is also an “About Avignon” menu that allows you to see what the property is all about.
It’s a fun app and provides the opportunity to give your photos an Impressionist look. Be sure to check this one out! I’m really liking this one!
All the best…Mike
