Tweak Your iPhone Photos on the Fly: by Pamela Flora

Oct 12, 2010Adobe Photoshop has an entry in the iTunes App Store that allows you to edit your iPhone photos on the fly – on your phone or on your iPad. Better still, this app is free!

Adobe Photoshop Express is a lightweight but adequate app that lets you crop your photos; change exposure, saturation, tint, and contrast; filter your photos to look like a sketch, sharpen your photo, or throw it into soft focus; and add borders and effects (like vibrant, pop art, vignette blur, and more) to your photos. You can share your edited photos with Facebook, Twitter (via TwitPic), or on Photoshop.com,

Your choices with the effects, borders, and filters are limited to a few preselects. The exposure, saturation, and other adjustments are controlled by tracing your finger across the screen of your phone or iPad once you’ve selected the adjustment you want to make. This isn’t immediately apparent, but if you swipe or trace your finger across the screen from left to right, you can adjust the degree of saturation, for instance, or the color of the tint you want to add to your photo. The crop tool enables you to crop, straighten, rotate, or flip your photo. Each action you take to alter your photo can be undone and then redone if you want to play with your shot a little and experiment with different looks.

Will Photoshop Express replace your desktop Photoshop? Probably not. There are definite limits to what you can do to a photo in terms of post-processing. But for a quick-and-dirty crop job on an otherwise good photo, or to change a shot from color to black and white, for the price, you can’t beat Photoshop Express. It is one of my go-to apps for making minor adjustments on the fly to photos I’ve taken with my iPhone.
