Video Zoom2 for Your iPhone Video Camera

Don’t you wonder why Apple didn’t include a zoom on the video camera on your iPhone? Me too. Apparently so did the good folks at Mirage Labs (who make VideoPix, which we reviewed here previously). The concept is quite simple. Instead of using the provided Camera application to shoot video you use the Video Zoom 2 app. The Video Zoom 2 app looks much like the provided Camera app except that there is a zoom bar at the bottom of the screen.

Recording is very straight forward and simple. Once you record the video, your clip will be stored within the application. You click on the clip to play it, save it to the camera roll or delete it. I feel like I should write something else, but that’s about it.

I find it to be a useful addition to the iPhone and one that I will certainly use. I downloaded it for free but that might be a limited time offer. Bottom line…it works! Check it out.

All the best…Mike

  1. This is a digital zoom, correct?
Then the same effect can be done by cropping and scaling the video after capture. The video quality would be the same either way.
Do you recommend this because you can crop and scale in realtime while recording?
Otherwise, why pay for this if you already own software to do it post-capture?
Thanks! I’m just curious to know if I’m missing something.

  2. Yes. You are correct that this is a digital zoom and you could do this in post. But as you suggest, since I am not a videographer I do not have the time, expertise or patience to crop and scale iPhone videos in post. So the convenience is easily worth 99 cents to me.
