Marketing Campaigns for Photographers #3 The Facebook Group Tag
Last summer British cellular network Orange launched a very clever social media campaign. This wasn’t done with viral YouTube video and there weren’t any prizes offered to Facebook fans. Most interestingly it only involved a very (very) small amount of the population.
The campaign was titled GlastoTag (Glastonbury being a popular music festival and I’m guessing you know the Tag reference).
Basically a website was built around a large group shot from the festival and people could login with Facebook, zoom into the crowd and after they find themselves……. all they had to do was tag themselves…… simple!
The image has nearly 10,000 people tagged and just short of 7000 likes to date…… compare this to the Orange UK Facebook page which has under 700 fans.
The Campaign
So I was wondering how as a wedding photographer I could do the same thing….. it’s not worth the time building a stand alone website which integrates with Facebook but……. hang on…… I have a blog and I have a Facebook page….. what’s the difference?
I love this campaign because it costs nothing and requires very little effort.
All you need to do is post a large group shot from your wedding on your blog (nice and big about 1200 pixles wide) and invite people to tag themsleves in the picture.
The image is linked to a similar (although obviously smaller) version on your Facebook page.
What you do with all this new fans (sorry likes) and interest is up to you……but……
VERY IMPORTANT
Post this image the day after the wedding….no forget that….. as soon as you get home….. no….. from a laptop during the reception. In other words as soon as humanly possible!
YOUR photo on YOUR Facebook page could be where all of that post wedding discussion takes place.
“OMG look at your dress”
“This was when we were sober!”
You know the kind of thing…..wouldn’t you like to basically host that discussion? Or would you prefer it starts from an images someone took over your shoulder with an iPhone?

Michael, thank you for your article.
I upload as I am going along a quick selection of ‘rough’ edits onto FB – the kids and young adults love it and the more mature guests are starting to take note of the images as well.. Its a great marketing tool!
