May 15, 2010 – Boingo Wireless, the global leader in Wi-Fi, announced that Samsung’s new Wi-Fi enabled digital cameras will be pre-loaded with Boingo software, allowing customers to connect to 125,000 Boingo Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide for on-the-go photo and video sharing.
Initially the Boingo software will be pre-installed on the Samsung CL80 digital camera and users will be offered three months of complimentary Boingo Wi-Fi access. Support for additional models will be announced as they become available.
Sharing photos and videos online is an essential part of the photography experience. The CL80 will allow users to connect to the Boingo hotspot by simply clicking the “Boingo” button on the camera. Once connected you can easily upload your creations to social networks like Facebook and YouTube without the need to be tethered to a PC.
Boingo pre-installed on the CL80 is available in most regions worldwide and U.S. availability will be announced in the near future. Customers receive the first three months of Boingo free through a simple registration process. After the promotion period, customers have the option to subscribe to Boingo Mobile, a $7.05 monthly plan for unlimited Wi-Fi access to 125,000 locations worldwide.
What I’d really like to see is the ability to link the CL80 to your mobile phone using it’s built-in bluetooth connectivity. This would allow you to upload photos and videos from anywhere over the mobile network even if you don’t have access to a Wi-Fi hotspot. Unfortunately most mobile network providers don’t allow tethering of this type so we may not see this capability for a while.
The Samsung CL80 is a new item and not shipping as of May 15, 2010. It will be available from B&H Photo for around $399.99 so be sure to keep an eye out for its release.
