Canon EOS 7D Firmware Update Version 1.2.2

Canon LogoJuly 22, 2010 – Canon just released a firmware update for the EOS 7D. Firmware version 1.2.2 incorporates the following fixes:

  1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the set aperture moves when shooting movies in manual exposure mode using some Canon lenses (such as macro lenses).
  2. Fixes the AF point-selection behavior of the C.Fn III-7 (Manual AF pt. selec. pattern) custom function when set to [1].
  3. Fixes the AF point display for the viewfinder electronic level when shooting in the vertical position.
  4. Corrects misspellings in the Spanish and Thai menus for applicable products.

The Version 1.2.2 firmware is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.2.1. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.2.2, it is not necessary to update the firmware. Note that cameras with the Version 1.2.2 firmware (and also Versions 1.2.0, 1.2.1) cannot be downgraded to a previous firmware version (such as Version 1.1.0).

World's Largest Photo Taken with GigaPan EPIC Pro

GigaPan LogoMay 15, 2010 – The record for the World’s Largest Photo has just been broken. Awhile back I wrote about a 26 GigaPixel image that set the record as the world’s largest digital panorama. GigaPan, creators of the GigaPan EPIC Pro, announced that a 45 GigaPixel image taken of Dubai has taken the top spot as the world’s largest digital photo. If printed, this photo would be the size of nearly 1200 billboards.

Recently, photographer Gerald Donovan took a majestic image of a landscape in Dubai using the GigaPan EPIC Pro robotic camera mount. He shot the photo using a Canon 7D camera coupled with GigaPan’s EPIC Pro robotic mount, which took nearly 4,250 pictures over a three and half-hour time frame. With the help of GigaPan Engineers Randy Sargent and Paul Heckbert, they stitched together the thousands of photos into one very large image using Autopano stitching software and uploaded it to the GigaPan.org site.

Here’s a link to view the record-breaking image along with other famous images like Barack Obama’s Presidential Inaugural Address. No special downloads or programs are required.

  2. Optimizes program shift when the ISO setting of the camera is set to AUTO.
  3. Corrects a misspelling in the French-language menu.

Canon's EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Studio

Canon LogoMarch 27, 2010 – The recent explosion of DSLR cameras with video capability has turned many traditional videographers and photographers toward cameras like the Canon 1D Mark IV, 5D Mark II and the 7D for their stunning HD footage at very affordable prices. Apple’s Final Cut Studio has become the dominant choice for editing that HD video but the process involved in transcoding the H.264 files to Apple ProRes is very time consuming and processor-heavy.

Back on February 5th Canon announced the launch of their free plugin, EOS Movie Plugin-E1. Once the plugin is installed, it works in tandem with Final Cut Pro making editing video files from EOS cameras a much smoother and highly automated process. This week the plugin became available and can be download from Canon’s website. You can click on this link, or go to the 1D Mark IV, 5D Mark II or 7D product page, select the “Drivers & Downloads” tab, then select Mac OS X as your operating system. The page will refresh with a link to download the plugin.
