AT&T Mobile Hotspot App and Smartphone Tethering Plan Changes

AT&T LogoFeb 3, 2011 – PRESS SUMMARY – AT&T announced select smartphone customers will soon be able to connect multiple devices from their smartphone – via Wi-Fi – thanks to the new AT&T Mobile Hotspot application. The feature will first be available February 13, beginning with the in-store launch of the HTC Inspire™ 4G. Bundled with the AT&T Data Pro plan, customers will benefit from a total of 4GB for $45 per month.

iPhone Tethering – Another Epic Failure From AT&T

AT&T LogoJune 29, 2010 – On Monday June 7, 2010, Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs gave the Keynote address at the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) and as expected the new iPhone 4 was introduced. The sexy new hardware coupled with the updated iOS4 operating system made this the HOT gadget to have.

While there are many great new features in the hardware and software update, one that got many excited was Tethering (the ability to use your iPhone as a modem to connect your laptop, iPad or other device to the internet using AT&T’s 3G and EDGE networks). After the announcement I started doing a little research about the tethering feature and contacted AT&T for more details. At that time details were sketchy at best but the general gist was, you would need to be running the new operating system (iOS4) on either the new iPhone 4 or iPhone 3Gs and there would be an additional cost of $20 per month. Why Did AT&T Change Their iPhone and iPad Data Plans?

AT&T LogoJune 9, 2010 – If you’re an iPhone or iPad owner you may have already heard that AT&T is changing their data plans. There will no longer be an “unlimited data plan” available for new customers on either device. Existing customers are grandfathered in making it possible to keep your unlimited plan, but certain requirements apply. See my articles “AT&T Changes Data Plan for iPhone and Smartphone Users” and “AT&T Changes the iPad 3G Data Plans” for more details.

On Monday June 7, 2010 Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave the keynote address at their World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco and announced the new iPhone 4. This beautiful piece of hardware will be shipping at the end of June and will include the new iPhone operating system know as iOS4. The new operating system offers many new customer requested features like multitasking, background audio, VoIP capabilities, background location, push notifications and task completion notifications. All of these features plus many, many more will greatly enhance the user experience and make the iPhone more like a computer than a SmartPhone. Read More→

AT&T Changes the iPad 3G Data Plans

AT&T LogoJune 8, 2010 – Apple’s iPad has turned out to be a huge success. They sold 1 million iPads in just 28 days and hit the 2 million mark in less than 60 days. Apple began shipping the iPads internationally on May 28th and they’ve proven to be a huge hit over seas as well. Within the first month of launch the only model available was the iPad with Wi-Fi. Many people held out for the iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G for the ability to connect to the internet whenever and wherever they wanted using the AT&T mobile network.

When Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs first announced the iPad back in January of 2010, I like many were very excited to get my hands on this device. I purchased the 16 GB Wi-Fi only model and received it on April 3rd. I wanted the 3G but just couldn’t wait, I figured maybe I would just buy the 3G model later on and give the Wi-Fi to my wife. Well now I’m not so sure I would buy the 3G model at all! The powers that be at AT&T decided to change the data plans for the iPad and no longer offer an Unlimited Data Plan option. Read More→

AT&T Changes Data Plan for iPhone and Smartphone Users

AT&T LogoJune 8, 2010 – When Apple introduced the iPhone three years ago, the naysayers said who would ever want a touch screen phone like that. Fast forward to today, the iPhone is one of the most popular Smartphone on the market and Apple’s partnership with AT&T all but saved the wireless provider from going the way of the dinosaurs. AT&T is not the perfect wireless provider by any means, but in most populated areas where their 3G service is available, the connectivity is more than adequate for a great user experience.

AT&T as with all wireless providers, locks you in to a service contract for a specified amount of time and in return sells you a very expensive phone at a reduced rate. Most mobile phone users have learned to accept this as standard practice and just sign the contract without ever fully reading it. As part of the agreement with AT&T, iPhone users are required to spend an extra $30 a month in addition to their calling and messaging plan for an “Unlimited Data Plan”. In the beginning a lot of people complained about the $30 price, but once they started using the phone to surf the web, check and send email, download apps, play games online, share photos, stream music and YouTube videos, that $30 price suddenly didn’t seem so bad.
