World's Largest Photo Taken with GigaPan EPIC Pro

GigaPan LogoMay 15, 2010 – The record for the World’s Largest Photo has just been broken. Awhile back I wrote about a 26 GigaPixel image that set the record as the world’s largest digital panorama. GigaPan, creators of the GigaPan EPIC Pro, announced that a 45 GigaPixel image taken of Dubai has taken the top spot as the world’s largest digital photo. If printed, this photo would be the size of nearly 1200 billboards.

Recently, photographer Gerald Donovan took a majestic image of a landscape in Dubai using the GigaPan EPIC Pro robotic camera mount. He shot the photo using a Canon 7D camera coupled with GigaPan’s EPIC Pro robotic mount, which took nearly 4,250 pictures over a three and half-hour time frame. With the help of GigaPan Engineers Randy Sargent and Paul Heckbert, they stitched together the thousands of photos into one very large image using Autopano stitching software and uploaded it to the GigaPan.org site.

Here’s a link to view the record-breaking image along with other famous images like Barack Obama’s Presidential Inaugural Address. No special downloads or programs are required.

Review – ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod

ZipShot Logo

The ZipShot tripod from Tamrac, Inc, is a compact, ultra-light tripod that’s small enough to fit in a bag or backpack, yet strong enough to hold a camera and lens combination of up to 3 lbs. I recently received a review unit from Tamrac to test and put through its paces. Overall I was pleased with its ease-of-use, portability and sturdy construction and for a $50 street price it’s worth considering for your travel photography.

Below is my full review of the ZipShot Tripod.

Check out B&H Photo and Amazon.com for their latest ZipShot tripod prices.

ZipShot Compact, Ultra-Light Tripod

ZipShot LogoSummertime is coming and Tamrac creators of the ZipShot tripod want to make sure you don’t miss another memory. The ZipShot lightweight, collapsible tripod sets up in seconds and weighing just 11oz with a folded size of 15 inches, it’s small enough to put in a bag or backpack and take with you anywhere.

To open it, simply unhook the two red shock cords and release. The legs spring open and lock into place due to their built-in shock cords. When assembled the tripod measures approximately 44 inches high and 38 inches wide from leg to leg. The metal ball-head makes it easy to mount and adjust the angle of cameras and camcorders weighing up to 3 lbs.

Review – GigaPan EPIC Pro: by Greg Downing

GigaPan LogoIn a recent post I introduced you to the new GigaPan EPIC Pro robotic camera mount used to create GigaPixel panoramas with your DSLR. Greg Downing from xRez Studio created a great video review of the EPIC Pro and was kind enough to share it with the CurrentPhotographer.com community. Be sure to check out Greg’s original post for more details about the EPIC Pro and to see the really cool panorama he created during the demo.

UPDATE: In the first review many people including Greg and his team, were disturbed by the lack of stablity of the gigapan. This updated video shows how things can be tightened up to improve the performance. This may break your warranty, so you should probably contact GigaPan before making the adjustment. Read More→
