Marketing Campaigns for Photographers #3 The Facebook Group Tag

Last summer British cellular network Orange launched a very clever social media campaign. This wasn’t done with viral YouTube video and there weren’t any prizes offered to Facebook fans. Most interestingly it only involved a very (very) small amount of the population.

The campaign was titled GlastoTag (Glastonbury being a popular music festival and I’m guessing you know the Tag reference).

Basically a website was built around a large group shot from the festival and people could login with Facebook, zoom into the crowd and after they find themselves……. all they had to do was tag themselves…… simple! Read More→

Key Reasons To Bring Along a 2nd Shooter To A Wedding

When I first started out I did not shoot my own weddings. I was highly inexperienced and the thought of doing a wedding on my own was just daunting. To be able to move quickly, adjust my camera as necessary and still get the important shots was just too much to concentrate on in the fast paced environment of a wedding. What I did do though was a lot of 2nd shooter jobs. A 2nd shooter is a great tool to have as a wedding photographer. They allow you to take the informal photos that you want to capture that help create beautiful portfolios.

Weddings can go buy quickly, they really can. They may seem to last forever for a guest but for a professional wedding photographer trying to capture all of the important parts of a wedding it can go extremely quick. Having a 2nd photographer or 2nd shooter come along with you to an event solves several issues that you will face. The first is that it frees up your time.

With the 2nd shooter you can have them follow the bride and groom around during the event, ensuring that they are capturing the moments that they are sharing with their guests. This frees you up to take those informal and photojournalistic photos that our clients love to have. It allows you to take a little more time to be creative with your art. When you are by yourself many times you have to forgo the creative side and just be sure you “get the shot”. Read More→

Tools for Your Photography Business – Wedding Photographers

This is the third in our series looking at essential tools for your photography business. We’re going to be looking at some of the essential tools you’ll need to acquire in at least the first year (if not the first month) of your business.

Other articles in this series –

Part 1 – Software and Online Presence

Part 2 – Financials

Part 3 wedding photographers

There’s no standard kit bag for wedding photographers and generally it’s something that you’ll want to add to over time (unless you have a ton of spare cash lying around).

I’ve shot over 50 weddings with a D70, a SB-800 and a 1GB CF card….. it’s not something I’d recommend so my suggestions here are the bare minimum I’d be happy taking with me today.

First rule – Whatever equipment you have – MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP

What is important is buying what you can afford. It’s better to have two lesser camera bodies than one bad boy you had to remortgage your house for.

The hardest thing to accept in the beginning is that the a camera body you just brought that costs more than your first car is probably not going to last as long.

Someone once told me that the easiest way to tell the difference between a professional photographer and an amateur is not what kit they use but how much tape they have holding it all together.

Shooting A Beautiful Bridal Portrait Session

We’ve all seen it. We walk into a studio or a wedding show and we see the most beautiful bridal portrait in a setting you have never seen in a pose you never thought to use. The bride looks so wistful and full of hope. So beautiful and elegant. You stare at the photo just wondering what they are thinking. That is a great photo. It is what you want to achieve with your own photography. You want people to stand in awe of your work, wondering, day dreaming, envious. So how can you create that one of a kind photo in your own work?

Well to be honest, you either have it or you don’t. Simple as that. Creativity cannot be taught but it can be molded, honed, skillfully polished to help you create wondrous beauty. Many of us are naturally gifted in that we can see an image in something that no one else can and thus make it a masterpiece. Others take time to develop that skill. To be able to think on our own and develop the intuition needed to create wonder. While I cannot teach you how to be great I can give you some pointers on how to start the process. How do you create a beautiful photo for a bride? You give her what she wants. Read More→
